Necessity or Vanity, Why What You Wear Could Be Costing You New Clients
Paris Hilton, vain or genius? Her name and looks have become her credit card and she's taken them all the way to the bank. How are you utilising your looks in your business?! Recently I’ve been preoccupied with a profound question: how important is image in business? Is it about being vain or is it a sincere concern for coming across as professional and put together to attract the ‘right’ type of client?
The latter according to Ben Angel author of Sleeping Your Way to The Top in Business – The Ultimate Guide to Attracting & Seducing More Customers.
“Visual representation in business is more important than most realise - especially when it is attached to an individual. Our clothes indicate to others; our status, how seriously we take ourselves, how seriously we take our business, how seriously we take the other people we are meeting with and whether or not we are the sort of individual others want to be associated with as a customer or colleague.” Angel Says.
Ben’s controversial new book has dedicated a full chapter to; professional presentation, the meaning of colours, cuts and styles to be worn for various industries and what it really means to hold a professional image. He’s also got a cheeky tip aimed at men who haven’t seen their proverbial for years due to weight gain! Angel’s Joan Rivers styled book is a humorous slap in the face for most professionals who have let their looks slip. He commands the most from his readers and challenges them to try harder when it comes to professional appearance and being groomed well enough to attract their core market.
“You are the product and your clothes are the wrapping that represents your personal brand. Get this wrong and you’re sending prospective customers the message that you don’t take yourself or them seriously enough. One of the simplest and most common mistakes men make when dressing is associated with their shoes and not keeping them clean. Most women won’t date men with dirty shoes let alone purchase from them. The logic is that if they can’t keep their shoes clean then what else can’t they do? The devil is in the detail and its costing businesses thousands of unrealised income because they’re missing the finer distinctions that make the difference between a mediocre business and a great one.” Ben says.
As we all know colours have been utilised for years in marketing however little attention has been paid to the colours we wear around our clients and colleagues. According to Angel’s book: red commands attention, encourages brain wave activity and makes a bold statement, purple is historically related to royalty, mystery and conversely sexual frustration and charcoal grey makes the statement of success, seriousness and of a well-informed individual. Ben’s message is clear, “Pay more attention to the details especially when networking with key influencers and clients. A recent client of mine struggled for more than six months to attract clients to his consulting business. A week after his makeover, he signed six clients and was booked for his first ever paid speaking engagement. The results are instant. Don’t hesitate - it is out of necessity not vanity.”
After reading Ben’s book I’ll not only be going for my eyebrow wax but to also purchase a new tailored charcoal suit. Let’s hope the boss notices!
