Why You Can't Get a Promotion! Could You Be Killing Your Career?

Everyday thousands of employee’s are asking themselves the question: Why can’t I get a promotion? Well according to Ben Angel author of the new controversial book Sleeping Your Way to The Top in Business, the answer is simple, “It’s what you wear and the personal brand that you’ve created that may be killing your career.”

Ben’s new book aimed at business and marketing professionals has a message that resonates from top management through to lower ranks where personal branding is the hot topic of the moment and needs to be well considered.

“Whether or not individuals are employed or run their own business they have their own personal brand and that personal brand dictates their business and career success and must be protected, managed and created consciously just as a Hollywood star would develop theirs.” Angel Says.

Ben’s definition of personal branding is: “Self expression amplified to influence and command attention. It is about authentically communicating who you are, your message, your skill-set and your intentions clearly through what you wear, how you behave, and who you associate with on and offline. Fail to find the right combination for your personal brand and it could kill your career prospects. Wearing sloppy and dated clothes may indicate to others that you lack structural skills and that you are out of touch with what’s going on around you. That in itself is incredibly dangerous to your career progression.”

Angel’s Joan Rivers styled book is a humorous slap in the face for most professionals who have let their looks and brands slip. He commands the most from his readers and challenges them to try harder when it comes to professional appearance and being groomed well enough to attract a job promotion, clients or even a partner.

“With the advent of social media we have seen personal branding evolve and develop significantly. Your Facebook, Myspace, Youtube and Twitter accounts are all communicating to others the type of individual you are, who you are associated with and whether or not you make a good partner, employee or client. Understand that your next boss could be online and complaining about your work day could kill any future career prospects. Everyone is now their own publicist and we must manage our brands on and offline to achieve the type of success we’re seeking.” Angel says.

Ben’s tips for personal branding online are simple. “Tweeting while angry is like driving when drunk. You’re going to wake-up with a hangover and possibly in the unemployment queue.” Angel Says.

While this book isn’t for the fainthearted it is certainly an appropriate wake-up call for those serious about progressing their career, even if it is all about Sleeping Your Way to The Top by utilising seductive methods like, visual, energetic and verbal engagement. It's not a read that I'll be forgetting anytime soon.
